The Reagan Pledge

The Reagan PledgeIn 1986, President Ronald Reagan signed the “Taxpayer Protection Pledge,” a commitment to oppose any increase in taxes on America’s families. Initiated by Americans for Tax Reform, the simple document transforms opposition to tax hikes from mere campaign trail rhetoric to an iron clad promise to taxpayers.

The Pledge reads:

I, Keith Richardson, pledge to the taxpayers of the 5th District of the State of Pennsylvania and to the American People that I will: ONE, oppose any and all efforts to increase the marginal income tax rates for individuals and/or businesses; and TWO, oppose any net reduction or elimination of deductions and credits, unless matched dollar for dollar by further reducing tax rates.

As of December 17, 2007, 195 Representatives and 42 Senators of the 110th Congress have signed the Pledge, including Congressman John Peterson (R-5th).

On February 1st, 2008, Keith Richardson signed ATR’s Taxpayer Protection Pledge – his commitment to stand with taxpayers against unfair levels of taxation.
