What a great first day!

February 5, 2008

The formal announcement of my candidacy came out today along with a roll-out of the website. Everyone’s response was extremely positive.I had my first round of interviews today, too. I have to be honest, this is new to me, and I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. Would these reporters be like the White House Press corps, trying to trip me up or play journalistic hardball? It turns out that they are just like everyone else in the 5th District: decent, hard-working folks doing their jobs and doing them well. Their questions were straight and fair, and I came away from the experience greatly encouraged.

I had the great pleasure of meeting new friends and supporters in Franklin. Thanks so much to Robyn for hosting a TableTalks, and to Rusty and Darla for hosting another. Campaigning is a lot of hard work, but it’s also invigorating. The very best part for me personally is getting to make new friends like those I made today. I truly look forward to TableTalks all over the 5th District. If you would like to host a TableTalks, just let me know. All that’s involved is gathering a group around a kitchen table, allowing me to introduce myself, and talking about issues that are important to conservative Republicans. Everyone has come away feeling that it was a great experience.

I want to remind everyone that I need help with circulating petitions to have my name placed on the ballot. Other candidates may be able to outspend us, but I’m determined they will not outwork us! This is so important, because I have been a pastor, not a politician. Thus, we don’t have the normal “machinery” that others may have. But if we will work hard for this next week, we will be on our way to restoring statesmanship to government and bringing back some common sense to Washington. Please let us know if you can help by collecting signatures, even if it’s just a few. Every signature counts!
